MOUNT VERNON — Whether you are harvesting crops from your garden or shopping for produce at the market, it’s important to know what qualities to look for in your selection in order to bring home the freshest and tastiest fruits and veggies for your family’s table.

According to Paul Miller, owner of Miller’s Farm Market, 5 Martinsburg Road, most produce, such as bananas, apples, zucchini and berries, will tell you when they’re ripe or when they’re bad and can be assessed simply based on appearance, smell and texture.

“Blackberries and blueberries, if they’re not rotten, they’re good!” he chuckled.
