MOUNT VERNON — When the words fried green tomatoes are uttered, many people recall a 1991 Kathy Bates film. But, fried green tomatoes are much more than a simple subplot in a comedy-drama. They are actually a real life, salty, tangy, delicious southern summer favorite, which is gaining popularity nationwide.

When eaten raw, green tomatoes, which are unripened tomatoes, have a very bitter, sour flavor. But, once fried, the flavor completely transforms, resembling a mild fried pickle. Fried green tomatoes are often eaten as a side dish at barbecues or between bread as a sandwich.
