MOUNT VERNON — A rusty steel bolt found Monday by a Mount Vernon child turned out to have a hollowed-out compartment packed with illegal drugs.

The girl, a 9-year-old resident of East Pleasant Street, turned the bolt over to her mom, who called police. Inside were small bags containing substances believed to be meth and heroin.

Mount Vernon Police Department Capt. Scott McKnight said the child’s unsuspecting discovery could have turned deadly. Accidental exposure to either of the drugs could have resulted in an accidental overdose, McKnight said.

“We need to remind everyone to be careful what you’re picking up,” McKnight said. “It could contain some type of narcotic that could cause an immediate overdose.”
