MOUNT VERNON — On the fifth day of this month, a new pizza parlor opened up in town; but, this pizza parlor is unlike any other in Knox County: Amato’s Woodfired Pizza, 668 N. Sandusky Street. Amato’s offers authentic wood-fired pizzas topped with fresh, local ingredients.

Amato’s Woodfired Pizza originated in Delaware, Ohio, in the spring of 2010.

“Eight years ago, (the original Amato’s opened in Delaware),” Dustin Overholser, director of operations at the Mount Vernon pizza shop, said. “It was a carry-out when it first started. (About six years ago, it) expanded into the storefront next door to become a full-service restaurant.”

Due to the huge amount of success the restaurant received in Delaware, owners Craig Johnson and Brad Hanpu decided to expand and build sites in other central-Ohio cities, Mount Vernon being the first.

Since it’s opening June 5, the Mount Vernon Amato’s Woodfired Pizza has received rave reviews and mounds of success.

“We had what was called a ‘soft opening,’ and we were doing twice as many sales on a Monday (compared) to what the Delaware store is doing on a weekend,” Overholser said. “It’s been crazy.”
