MOUNT VERNON — The grandmother of two young girls whose dog was shot while they were nearby said she feels the children were in harms way.

Nicholas C. Painter, 24, of Mount Vernon, is charged in Mount Vernon Municipal Court with discharging a firearm in city limits. The charge stems from May 14, when Painter allegedly shot and killed a neighbor’s dog at his residence.

Two minor girls, age 10 and 11, were in the vicinity when Painter shot the dog, their pet pit bull. Mount Vernon police reports indicate the girls were trying to separate their dog, named Pac Man, from Painter’s dog just before the shooting occurred.
