MOUNT VERNON — Griffin Beach can teach people a thing or two about golf.

He’s also pretty good about helping out for a good cause.

Beach and his foursome were 3-under par through 13 holes when the rain interrupted play at the annual Joe Mortellaro Junior Golf Tournament at Mount Vernon Country Club on Monday to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities. Even though he couldn’t officially claim the best score, he did earn an award for raising the most money for the cause.

By the way, he’s 9 years old.

Beach is a young golfer who has played since he was 2. He honed his skills at Hiawatha in Mount Vernon, which is close to some relatives. It isn’t unusual for him to come off the course under par.
