Pam Schehl/News Cancer survivors take the ceremonial first lap Friday at the 2017 Relay for Life of Knox County event.

MOUNT VERNON — If there was ever any doubt that Knox County is a caring community, those doubts were definitely dispelled Friday, as hundreds of people turned out for the 2017 Relay for Life event.

Led by honorary chair Tripp Heffelfinger, 3-year-old cancer warrior, 32 relay teams took to the track at Mount Vernon High School Energy Stadium to raise money in search of a cure, but mostly to celebrate cancer survivors and those caregivers who give time, love and support.

Kim Franks, event lead, said this year’s goal was to raise $246,000 in the fight against cancer. She was confident that goal would be reached, since last year’s total raised was $269,000.
