MOUNT VERNON — The lawn of The Living Center was the scene of a short Flag Day celebration Wednesday, which included the replacement of the center’s flag, patriotic songs and memories of a flag used as a pillow.

George Curry, president of the Veterans Service Commission, was the keynote speaker and told how, when he was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division, he carried the flag with him through the 50 days he spent in Cambodia in the 1970-71 incursion.

“I carried it with me in my rucksack and even used it as a pillow. It still has the stains of dirt from Cambodia,” he said.
