MOUNT VERNON — A Columbus woman pleaded guilty to a charge stemming from the attempted theft of wheels at a Fredericktown car dealership.

Brittany N. Messer, 26, pleaded guilty Friday in Knox County Common Pleas Court to one count of theft, a fifth-degree felony. In exchange for her guilty plea, a charge of breaking and entering was dismissed.

The charge stems from Oct. 3, when Messer and three co-defendants were caught in the act of allegedly removing the rims and tires from a vehicle in the lot of Fredericktown Chevrolet.

Speaking in court Friday, Messer said she “stole the rims to pay for a drug habit I have.”

Common Pleas Court Judge Richard Wetzel ordered a presentence investigation and scheduled sentencing for July 21.
