NAPLES, Fla. — JoAnne (Smith) Caya, 86, passed away on May 16, 2017, in Naples, Florida, after a short illness. She was born April 6, 1931, the daughter of the late Lloyd and Helen (Titus) Smith of Gambier.

JoAnne graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1949 and then attended Mount Vernon Business School. While in school, JoAnne was active in sports, playing basketball, volleyball and softball. Working at Riverside Park in the summers. She, along with several friends, headed to Washington, D.C., after graduation to go to work for the Federal Government. There she met her husband, Ronald Caya, at a dance for service men in the area.

JoAnne and Ronald married in 1953 and spent the next 20 years traveling while Ronald had a career as a medic in the Navy. They then settled in California. JoAnne retired after 30 years with the Federal Government. She retired in 1987 as a Special Agent for the Department of Defense in Monterey. JoAnne and Ronald then retired to Naples, Florida.

JoAnne is survived by her husband, Ronald; sister, Margaret (Earl) Gorsuch of Gambier; brother, Carty (Jean) Smith of Apple Valley; and sister, Claire Smith of Naples, Florida; as well as three generations of nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by a nephew, Ronald Smith of Gambier.

There will be no local services. Donations can be made in her memory to Avow Hospice, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34109, or the charity of your choice.
