MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chad Christopher announced Friday the fire department has received two grants recently, one of which will pay most of the cost for a new fire truck.

The other will buy ballistic vests to keep medics safer in dangerous situations.

The city will receive a $637,728 Assistance to Firefighters grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for fiscal year 2016.

The grant will pay most of the cost of a new Quint/Aerial truck the city has been planning to purchase to replace the 25-year-old ladder truck.

Christopher said the Quint has a 75-foot ladder, whereas the old truck has a 92-foot ladder. It also has a shorter wheel base, enabling it to maneuver through more city streets, and is a more versatile truck.
