MOUNT VERNON — On Thursday, the Knox County Commissioners held their second public hearing on the half percent sales tax increase. But, a tax increase wasn’t the only thing on the minds of citizens.

The hearing bounced from the proposed increase to state and federal funding to the drug problem that Knox County is facing.

The commissioners said they need to increase the sales tax from 6.75 percent to 7.25 percent as a way to stay afloat while facing rising costs and reduced support from the state. County officials made cuts of 20 percent to operations in 2009 and 2010, but they said they are still having trouble staying in the black.
