HOWARD — East Knox High School shot put qualifier Jake Gibson is going to step up to the toe board at Jesse Owens Stadium at Ohio State University on Friday in the most intelligent way he can. When the junior makes his first-ever appearance at the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships, he will do it alone.

Of course, there will be the usual big crowd in the stands. And he will have the usual following of coaches, parents and family wearing Bulldog purple and cheering him on. And there will be 15 other throwers, taking their turn in the circle, heaving the shot and looking for a spot on the podium and, perhaps, a little more. Gibson, however, will be concentrating on a single opponent with a single purpose.
