MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon Police are investigating the shooting of a dog Sunday on the north end of town.
Knox County 911 received four calls Sunday regarding a dog being shot from a window of a 10 block Elizabeth Street residence. The callers included at least one person from the residence where the dog was shot, as well as a neighbor reporting shots fired.
A woman who identified herself as a resident of the home where the dog was shot said the dog was fighting with their dog. The woman told dispatch that “we just shot a dog that was attacking our dog.” The woman said two kids were trying to separate the dogs and the kids “were gonna get hurt.”
The woman states the firearm is inside the home. She then says the “neighbors are yelling at us” and indicates the neighbors are going to fight them.
A call to 911 was also received from a man identifying himself as being with a local animal hospital. The man states that 911 needs to send police because “there is a family grieving here, somebody like, actually shot their dog. Tell them to hurry up because this is crazy.”
A caller identifying themselves as a neighbor said the dog was shot from a bedroom window. The neighbor said two shots were fired.
A North Gay Street resident called 911 to report hearing “like seven shots,” and “some people screaming and running down the street.”
The News was told Monday by a representative of MVPD the case was under investigation. A copy of the report has been requested by the News.
