MOUNT VERNON — On May 5, 1862, Mexico won an improbable victory over French occupation in the Franco-Mexican War, during the Battle of Puebla. The anniversary of that victory has since been celebrated as “Cinco de Mayo” in Mexico and the United States as a way to honor Mexican culture, dine on traditional cuisine and enjoy some ice-cold margaritas.

Manager Irene Rivera, sister of Fiesta Mexicana owner Jose Avalos, has been busy preparing for Friday’s holiday. She is happily expecting the restaurant to be packed full with enthusiastic customers and friends.
