MOUNT VERNON — East Elementary School fielded the champion team in the 2017 Knox County Schools Fifth-grade Battle of the Books Competition. They faced off with 11 other fifth-grade teams from all around the county to win the title for the second year in a row. Wiggin Street Elementary came in second.

There were 11 rounds of competition, with each round having five “heats” between two teams each, with one team having a bye. During each heat, the teams were asked to identify eight books (out of 88 on the reading list) based on plots, characters and settings. Correctly naming title and author earned full points. The points could be split if one team knew the title and the other answered with the correct author. The opposing team could also “steal” the points if the first team answered incorrectly. Teams could have up to 11 players, with a maximum of six permitted to compete in each round.
