MOUNT VERNON — City Council took a step in increasing wastewater rates in the city by giving first reading to an ordinance implementing the changes recommended by the Water/Wastewater Commission.

Between the wastewater rates, and the water rates already increased by order of Safety-Service Director Joel Daniels, city customers will be paying an additional $10.83 per month for at least the next year.
By that time, Mayor Richard Mavis has said the city will have a better picture of what kind of long-term rate hikes will be needed to keep the utility funds in the black and pay for needed projects in both departments.
