GAMBIER — Charles W. “Bill” Smith, 78, of Gambier, passed away Feb. 19, 2017.

He was born Dec. 19, 1938, in Knox County, to the late George and Mamie (Shoults) Smith.

Bill was a harness horse race driver and owned several horses over the years, and was a member of the U.S. Trotting Assoc. and the Knox Co. Horseman’s Assoc.

He is survived by his son, Charles (Maree) Smith Jr.; three brothers, Paul (Alice) Smith, Dale (Jenny) Smith and Gail Smith; a sister, Mae Matheny; and two grandchildren, William and Ashley all of Gambier.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Linda in 2008.

Friends may call on Friday, from 5-8 p.m., at Lasater Funeral Home, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road in Mount Vernon, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in Gambier.
