MOUNT VERNON — A Utica man was found guilty by a jury Thursday in Mount Vernon Municipal Court of leaving the scene of an accident.

Mark A. Eddy, 53, was found guilty at the close of a one-day jury trial of one count of failure to stop after an accident, a first-degree misdemeanor. Eddy was further found guilty of assured clear distance, a minor misdemeanor, in a separate decision by Municipal Court Judge John Thatcher.

Thatcher proceeded to disposition after the verdict, sentencing Eddy to three days in jail, $400 in fines plus court costs, a 180-day driver’s license suspension and two years probation.

Both of the charges against Eddy stem from a Dec. 5, 2016, two-vehicle crash. According to Assistant Law Director Brittany Whitney, Eddy rear-ended a vehicle driven by Lincoln Rainer, 15, on Ohio 229, as Lincoln was making a left turn onto Springwater Drive.
