Fred Main/News Highland’s Madison Cecil goes up for a shot past the defense of Elgin’s Bekah Muselin (22) during Friday’s Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference game. The Scots won, 49-40.

SPARTA — Experience usually helps a team fight through the toughest of storms.

Highland’s girls basketball team turned to its veteran leaders late and they weathered a couple of strong comebacks from the Elgin Comets on Friday, posting a 49-40 victory in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference action.

After Elgin had trimmed a 10-point deficit down to three with less than two minutes remaining, senior Taylor Belcher and junior Kenzie Fuller stepped up and plugged the gaps in the dike. They took care of the basketball as the Comets were pressing them hard, and then hit 6 of 8 free throws to stave off the challenge.
