HOWARD — An Apple Valley family was able to escape from a residential fire at 121 Lakeview Heights Drive on Thursday morning.

Jeffrey Cunningham was working on a vehicle in his garage and left to wash his hands when a spark of heat from operating equipment ignited the vapors from a gas leak in the vehicle, according to Lt. Aaron Jones of the Eastern Knox County Joint Fire District. The fire spread from the vehicle to the garage and the back portion of the house before firefighters from EKCJFD, Mount Vernon, College Township and Bladensburg departments were able to douse the flames.
