MOUNT VERNON — A Celebration of Life Service for Duane E. Barber Sr. will be held at 11 am, on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at the Gay Street United Methodist Church, 18 N. Gay St., Mount Vernon. Rev. Denise Marikis will officiate. Burial will follow in the Union Grove Cemetery, near Gambier. Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m., on Wednesday, at the Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st St., in Newark, and one hour prior to the funeral service on Thursday, at the church.
Mr. Barber, 78, of Newark, passed away Saturday, Dec. 24, 2016, at the Selma Markowitz Hospice Center. He was born June 9, 1938, near Fredericktown, a son of the late Ralph and Gladys (Smith) Barber. For six years, Mr. Barber served in the US Army Reserves. He retired from Kroger working as a meat cutter for many years. He had first worked at Richie’s Market and later at the A&P. Mr. Barber was a member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church, The Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias and the Dokkies.
Surviving is his wife of 58 years, Claire (Alexander) Barber, whom he married on May 30, 1958; three children, Carol (Dennis) Love of New Lexington, Cathy Barber of Columbus, Duane E. Barber Jr., of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Brian (Sarah) Love of Ankeny, Iowa, Catie Love of New Lexington; his sister, Helena Alberts of Amity, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. His parents and his twin brother, Wayne, and brother, Virgil, preceded him in death.
