You’ve seen the bumper stickers. “Jesus is the reason for the season!” Trite, and often stuck on the bumper of someone who just cut you off or flipped you the bird. But just because something is trite or attached to hypocrisy does not make it untrue.

In this case, however, I think even many Christians misunderstand this oft-cited Christmas platitude. Yes, Jesus is the reason for the season, but perhaps not in the way we tend to think. Technically, the reason we celebrate Christmas is “the birth of Jesus.” OK, sure. But what if it is more than that? What if it’s more than just a day to mark the occasion of an historical figure’s birth?
