MOUNT VERNON — There is no greater honor than to serve others, and during this Christmas season the board, executive leadership, staff, and volunteers at Starting Point look back on 2016 with grateful hearts for the opportunity to have positively impacted many lives in the community by providing confidential support to people with needs related to sexuality, pregnancy, and post-abortion recovery at no cost to their clients.

During the past 12 months, Starting Point has served 286 individual women and men by the organization’s staff and volunteers. One young woman described her experience with Starting Point during an unexpected pregnancy as “awesome.” A teen couple called the organization their “rock,” with each of them leaning on Starting Point for different reasons during their pregnancy.

“We are so privileged to serve the Greater Knox County community,” said Executive Director Kassandra Baker. “Many times, the young lady who comes to us for a pregnancy test feels hopeless about her situation. It’s amazing to see how love and support bring hope to a difficult circumstance.”

A community that cares

Starting Point is also blessed to have been on the receiving end throughout 2016 by benefiting from generous donors, the public-at-large and other individuals and organizations in the community who have supported — and continue to support — the organization in significant ways.

“There really are no words to express our heartfelt joy for such generosity,” said Baker, who noted that all of Starting Point’s operational costs, which include the needs of its clients and staff, have been funded to date in 2016.

Funds are provided by individuals, businesses and churches. The community supports Starting Point in other ways including annual fundraising events such as the Banquet, Baby Bottle Campaign, WALK, and the Year-end Appeal — alongside the organization’s monthly and quarterly donations from individuals and churches.

An anchor for its clients

Finally, recognizing that it’s important for those whom Starting Point serves to feel safe, comfortable and welcome whenever they visit the Center seeking confidential support, the organization launched a capital campaign earlier this year that included remodeling the building purchased for them by donors in 2014. Kept separate and apart from the operating budget, the capital campaign is funded by personal donations, businesses, and grants.

At the end of 2016, a significant portion of the Building REMODEL project has been funded and completed. Anyone interested in supporting their capital campaign with a holiday gift can donate at KnoxStartingPoint.com, or contact Diane Henwood, Development Director, at 740-393-5074.
