SHELBY — The town of Shelby might not have been named after the great car designer, Carroll Shelby, but just as his cars ran up and down America’s highways, so did the host Whippets on the basketball court against Mount Vernon on Saturday in the Northern Ohio League-Ohio Cardinal Conference Challenge.
But, after trailing by 20 points at the end of the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets made a remarkable comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 32 points to cut the lead to five points before finally losing, 69-63.
“We had 25 total turnovers, 19 in the first half,” Mount Vernon head coach Doug Savage said. “They (Shelby) used a full-court press, and when we were able to break it and not turn the ball over we had some nice looks and easy scores. But we gave up too many live-ball turnovers that led to fast breaks and easy layups. That was our downfall in the first half.”
