MOUNT VERNON — Mansfield Senior’s Erica Johnson worried Mount Vernon head girls basketball coach Doug Savage. The coach made sure his best player, Taylor Gregory, defended Johnson at every turn.

As a result, Johnson never dominated — until the final minute of Thursday’s game.

Johnson scored five points in a 15-second stretch, erasing a four-point Yellow Jacket lead and allowing the Tygers to steal a 42-41 Ohio Cardinal Conference victory at The Hive.

Still, Savage had nothing but praise for Gregory, who held the Tygers’ star senior to 17 points.

“Taylor did a nice job in extending out and making her (Johnson) shoot over her,” Savage said. “She (Johnson) can take a shot any time she wants to.”
