MOUNT VERNON — Hearts were heavy across American Thursday afternoon when the death of American icon John Glenn was announced. That sentiment was felt in Knox County by many who knew him personally.
“This is a blow to all of us,” said Mayor Richard Mavis. “It seems like he has always been someone to look up to and remember.
“When I ran for state representative in 1983, Glenn flew his own aircraft into the airport. I picked him up and he spoke at my campaign kick-off.”
