MOUNT VERNON — Triston Bowens didn’t come to the Bad Apple Brawl expecting to win.

The Mount Vernon freshman was in his first high school wrestling tournament, facing teammate Dylan Colopy in the final of the 132-pound bracket in Saturday. Colopy, a senior, had already pinned Bowens during the round-robin portion.

But, during their championship match, Bowens found an opening and took his teammate down, earning enough points to pull off a 5-4 victory.

“I worked my butt off to get here,” Bowens said after the match. “This feels great.”

Bowens was one of three Yellow Jackets to earn a championship at the Brawl, which was held at The Hive. Ashton Spurgeon (195 pounds) and Cameron Farmer (120) also earned first place, while Colopy chalked up the lone second place for Mount Vernon. They helped push the Jackets to a third-place finish as a team.
