MARENGO — Most winning basketball teams have a spark plug — a player whose actions spark a team to rally.

For the Highland Fighting Scots on Thursday, that was Erica Sardinha.

Just seconds into the second half against East Knox, Sardinha stole the ball and took it coast-to-coast for a layup. Less than a minute later, just to make her point, the junior did it again.

“It gave us a lot of confidence,” Sardinha said. “We thought then that we could take it from them.”

Sardinha finished with 10 points and six steals to lead the Scots to a 52-39 victory over the Bulldogs in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
