MOUNT VERNON — On Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, we lost our beloved Gregory Guido Schlairet to cancer at age 64. He was a devoted husband, dear uncle, loving cousin and generous friend to many.

Greg grew up in Mount Vernon, attended St. Vincent de Paul School and was an active member of the Catholic Church for several years in Columbus and Mount Vernon.

Upon his dad’s wise counsel, Greg enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Grandview Heights High School in Columbus. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station and was later transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was proud of his military service and grateful for the wonderful care that the VA provided him later in life.

Greg spent nearly 30 years in the transportation business, a talent that came naturally to him. His father, Charles Vincent Schlairet, had been president of E.A. Schlairet Transfer Co., a local family-owned transportation business that enjoyed much success throughout Ohio.

Greg was also involved with Community Theater in Cincinnati and Mount Vernon, taking on many diverse and complicated roles. His latest accomplishment was repeatedly portraying the challenging role of Larry, the antagonist in Jim Stoner’s “The Black Cyclone.”

We will remember Greg for his love of animals, his laid-back sense of humor, and devotion to family. And he never shied away from stepping in to assist with any need of The Mount Vernon Players theater troupe, or a good argument on politics or religion.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Paola (Biby) Schlairet, his wife Diana (Robinson). He is survived by his sister, Gloria Hamblin; two nieces, Christina Cosner and Wendy Schorr; and four grandnieces and nephews.

Dowds Snyder Funeral Home at 201 Newark Road will be handling the funeral arrangements. A Memorial service and celebration of Greg’s life is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Waterford United Methodist Church, 20595 Waterford Rd., Fredericktown, Ohio 43019. Guests may pay their respects from 10-11a.m., with the service at 11 a.m., followed by a light lunch. A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Mount Vernon.

Memorial remembrances may be made at www.snyderfuneralhomes. com. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Greg’s name, which can be made payable to The Mount Vernon Players, or mailed to Mount Vernon Players, P.O. Box 802, Mount Vernon, OH, 43050.

The Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home of Mount Vernon is honored to serve the family of Gregory Guido Schlairet.
