HOWARD — Helen Hogan turns 99 today and her life has been anything but boring.

Born in South Bend, Ind., Hogan said she was the youngest of seven children, who grew up during the Great Depression. Her family, she said, never noticed it was a hard time. When she was 1 year old, the family moved to Niles, Mich., where her father had an orchard and a garden; her mother took care of the berry plants on the farm. Hogan said she attended a two-room school where she loved all of her teachers and attending school. She had a love of learning that carried over to a career in teaching.
