MOUNT VERNON — Although school buildings in the area only allow limited access when classes are in session, security gets ramped up when certain emergency conditions exist.

That was the case Tuesday when the Mount Vernon City Police Department was pursuing a homicide suspect in the north end of town. The Northgate Head Start Center, Pleasant Street Elementary and Dan Emmett Elementary were advised by the MVPD to go into lockdown mode.
