MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon boys volleyball coach Alan Cassell’s theory is simple: Play the best teams in the state, and you’ll be prepared for whatever the rest of the season throws at you.

It’s been a winning formula over the years. The Yellow Jackets have been to the state quarterfinal level five of the past seven years. They are the defending outright Ohio Capital Conference champions — again. But, when you look at the high school trophy case, something is missing.

A state title.
