MOUNT VERNON — With plans 99 percent complete for the new hotel on Public Square, the demolition crew began work on Tuesday to disassemble one of the three buildings.

The hotel, which has yet to be named, will house 46 rooms in five floors, which will also include a conference room in the lower level.

Original plans called for a four-story hotel with 45 rooms that would extend from South Main Street through the northern half of Blackberry Alley, which runs north to south from Public Square to Vine Street.

Joanette Romero, spokesperson for CenturyLink, told the News that after several meetings between CenturyLink, the city and Mount Vernon Nazarene University regarding the easement CenturyLink holds in the vacated section of the alley, the college decided to add an additional floor “to remain within their budget.”
