MOUNT VERNON — Student safety is a top priority for parents and school personnel, and school arrival and dismissal times get special attention due to all the vehicular and pedestrian traffic involved.

At Pleasant Street Elementary, for example, pupils are dismissed at 3:40 p.m. and teachers take care to make sure 400 students exit in an orderly, timely and safe manner.

Principal Karen Boylan has orchestrated what might be likened to a traffic flow pattern that directs people to the correct lane for their “freeway” exit.
