MOUNT VERNON — Look for streets to be closed during the last part of the demolition of the Curtis Hotel and the Mazza buildings. Mount Vernon Engineer Cameron Keaton said demolition of the Curtis property will start at the east side near South Gay Street. There is no plan to close Gay Street, Keaton said, but one lane might be closed if conditions warrant.

When the work nears South Main Street, both lanes will be closed between Vine Street and Public Square.

The demolition on the Mazza building will follow the same pattern. Starting on the east side of the building, the demolition will work toward South Sandusky Street, which will be closed.

Machines for the demolition of both buildings are on the sites. Keaton said work on the Curtis Hotel will be postponed because of the freezing weather. He said water has to be sprayed to keep down the dust and that would create icy working conditions.

Asbestos removal is not complete on the Mazza building but the contractors at both sites should be able to start sometime next week.
