MOUNT VERNON — A deadline looms for uninsureds required to buy health insurance by March 31 or run afoul of the famously cranky IRS. Since its stumbling debut, has undergone major repairs that even staunch critics acknowledge. But for those who let their fingers do the walking, old-school assistance remains elusive. Local help with enrollment under the Affordable Care Act is a phone call away — if you can locate the number.

A search by the News for Knox County Navigators began and ended locally at Knox County Jobs and Family Services and Knox Community Hospital. In between, we found a wealth of inaccurate or incomplete information. J&FS provides no ACA information on its website, but replied promptly to an inquiry and identified The Main Place as Knox County’s Navigator. That was news, however, to The Main Place. Staff members said they’re not involved.
