MOUNT VERNON — Fire in a home at 11 Plaza Drive displaced five people, without injury, Sunday night. The home is owned by William Summerfield. The Mount Vernon Fire Department got the alarm at 6 p.m.

“When we got there it was going pretty good, flames were coming out the front,” incident commander Captain Dave Mills said.

Mills added the fire started in the attached garage and spread into the house. He said the house is totaled and estimated the loss at $80,000. Two vehicles outside in the drive were destroyed.

Eight Mount Vernon firefighters fought the blaze with mutual aid of six more from College Township. A hydrant was close by the house. Capt. Mills said they knocked the fire down in 15 minutes.

They were on the scene two hours and 15 minutes. The American Red Cross is giving aid to the victims. The residents were out in a car when the department arrived, Mills said. Fire investigator Terry Davis is looking into the cause of the fire.
