MOUNT VERNON — Madi Montgomery climbed the ladder to the fourth rung, took the scissors, looked at the basketball net and froze.
She didn’t know what to do.
After all, it’s been a while since the Mount Vernon girls basketball team had won a conference title.
Eventually, every team member — and every coach — climbed the ladder and cut off a piece of the net. It’s the traditional way to celebrate an outright Ohio Capital Conference championship.
“This is unreal,” Montgomery said during the celebration. “I can’t even describe how this feels.”
Mount Vernon won the title with a 58-48 victory over Olentangy on Monday. It’s an amazing turnaround from a team that went 3-18 just three years ago.
