MOUNT VERNON — Lakeholm Church of the Nazarene is now incorporating a new mural located in Gilley Hall into Sunday school lessons for children.

Wendy Sharpes, children’s pastor, and Laura Tappen, church member, said they got together last spring to think of a way to bring together the different parts of the children’s department in the church. Sharpes said the church has children’s classes all over the church, and “we wanted to find an area where kids have Sunday School … we have Children’s Church in here and Wednesday night activities in here and this has become our kid’s focal point.”

Tappen said that along with Sharpes, they found a basic idea for the mural on the Internet — a Bible village theme — but it wasn’t as detailed as what Tappen had in mind. Tappen and Sharpes painted the base coats, and Tappen developed the mural from there.

“Wendy proposed the idea and we ran with it. We came up with a lot of our own ideas,” said Tappen.
