The No. 5 Mount Vernon baseball team had an opening round bye and beat No. 35 Logan 7-0 in the Division I, Central 4 Sectional Final on May 15, led by a masterful performance on the hill by senior ace Konner Daughriety.
Daughriety went all seven innings, allowing only two hits and a walk, while striking out eight batters. He helped his own cause at the dish, as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
The Yellow Jackets wasted no time and took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After Daughriety pitched a scoreless top half, he hit a one out double to left to set the table. Following a single by Ezra Kurek, Kayden Packard hit a two run single to centerfield. Jonny Askew then hit an RBI single to right field and it was a three run lead right out of the gate for Mount Vernon.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Caden Thiebert scored on a fielder’s choice. The next inning, Askew knocked n two runs on a triple to make it a 6-0 game. They added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Nolan Hershberger to make it a seven run lead.
Askew was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Thiebert was 1-for-2 with a double, and also scored a pair of runs in the win for Mount Vernon. The Yellow Jackets had a total of nine hits in the victory.
Next up for Mount Vernon is a matchup with No. 13 Olentangy Liberty on May 21 at 5 p.m.
