The Mount Vernon Municipal Commission is set to review an application from Airco Inc., which proposes the use of the Shellmar site for outdoor storage of its raw and finished products.

Airco, a Georgia-based company that specializes in applying coatings to steel products, was mentioned in the Municipal Planning Commission's May 9 meeting agenda. The company plans to store its products and raw materials on the 27-acre former industrial site, once occupied by American National Can.

According to the same agenda, the products will be stored immediately before and after shipping. Outdoor storage is considered a permitted conditional use under the property's M-1 zoning designation.

The Municipal Planning Commission's May 9 meeting agenda also states that semi-trucks will utilize an access point on Madison Street for product drop-offs and pick-ups. The proposed operating hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Noise is expected primarily from loading and unloading semi-trucks and forklifts.

In terms of security measures, according to the Municipal Planning Commission's May 9 meeting agenda, the existing seven-foot fence around the property will undergo repairs with missing sections being replaced. Vegetative screening will be installed along the east side of the property, with Airco coordinating with the Shade Tree Commission for recommendations.
