BOILING SPRING LAKES, N.C. — Maria Thumm Gower, 99, of Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, went to be with Lord on Jan. 13, 2014, following a long illness. Mrs. Gower was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of the late John Michael and Inez Peterson Thumm.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh T. Gower, whom she married in 1950. She is also survived by two nieces, Nancy Dhonau of Wellington, Fla., and Patricia McIver of Goleta, Calif.

Mrs. Gower lived in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was a founding member of the Parma Hospital Auxiliary, served on the Board of Directors, and volunteered for 27 years. She was an Altar Guild Directress of All Saints Episcopal Church in Parma, Ohio.

She and her husband moved to Boiling Spring Lakes, N.C., in 1986. Her favorite pastime included enjoying golf, bridge and Mah Jongg.

There will be no local services. Burial will be in the Mound View Cemetery in Mount Vernon.
