MOUNT VERNON — T. Edward “Ed” Genre, 90, formerly of Green Valley Road, Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, April 15, 2014. Although born in Kent City, Mich., on Jan. 4, 1924, to the late Dr. Terence T. and Elizabeth M. Genre, his family relocated to Mount Vernon when he was in the first grade.
Ed is survived by his wife Calista “Cally” Rodgers Genre of Mount Vernon, whom he met at the First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon and married in 1952. He is also survived by daughters, Sandi (Dan) Smith of Mount Vernon and Polly (Jim) Meganck of Dexter, Mich.; a son, Joseph (Bonnie) Genre of Pittsburgh, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Robin (Brad) Edwards, Carissa (Jamie) Goodlet, Kevin (Ashley) Meganck, Anna (Kyu) Kim, Alex Genre, Katie Genre, and Maddie Genre; nine great-grandchildren, Samuel, Caleb, Nathan, and Joshua Edwards, Camden and Abigail Goodlet, Brooklyn Meganck, Lucia and Noelia Kim; a sister, Barbara (Roger) Spearman of Howard, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Genre of Mount Vernon; and a nephew, Terry Genre of Mount Vernon.
In addition to his parents, Ed is preceded in death by an infant son, Rodger and a brother, Derwin Genre.
Ed graduated from Mount Vernon High School (1941), then later in life while pursuing his dream of becoming a chef he graduated from The Culinary Institute of America (1972) in New Haven, Conn., and earned his Bachelor of Science in Restaurant Management from Florida International University (1974) in Miami, Fla. He operated his own restaurant, Concept X, in Cutler Ridge, Fla. While in Miami, Ed and Cally worked for Miami-Dade Health and Human Services as Group Home Parents and achieved the honor of Miami-Dade employees of the year.
When Ed retired, the Genres moved back to Mount Vernon in 1989. For 24 years, they enjoyed the warmth and friendship of living in the Green Valley community.
A memorial service will be Thursday, at 11 a.m., at Faith Baptist Church, 8764 Martinsburg Road, Mount Vernon, with Pastor Matt Otto officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the memorial service.
