SPARTA — William D. Griffith, 95, of Sparta, Ohio, died Tuesday morning, April 8, 2014, at the Morrow Manor Nursing Center in Chesterville. He was born April 14, 1918, in Putnam, Va., to the late William D. and Gertrude (Crawford) Griffith. William retired in 1982 after 38 years of employment with White Westinghouse, but his true love was when he was working on the family farm. William was an avid outdoorsman where he enjoyed trapping and hunting. He may well be known in Morrow County as the “great ginseng hunter.” He was a member of the Mount Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church.
William is survived by sons, Harry (Phyllis) Griffith of Chesterville, Jim (Nancy) Griffith of Centerburg, John (Loretta) Griffith of Fredericktown, Steve (Kathy) Griffith of Mount Vernon and Jeff (Julie) Griffith of Chesterville; daughters, Nancy Stanley of Marion, Libby Brown of Haslet, Texas, Jean (Jerry) Craig of Mount Vernon and Mary (Kevin) Lloyd of Marengo; 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Frances K. (Snyder) Griffith on March 18, 2006; son, Rondol Griffith; grandson, Shawn Griffith; brother, George Griffith; sister, Virginia Schersel; and sons-in-law, James Stanley and Arthur Brown.
The family will receive friends Friday, from 5-8 p.m., at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Elder Jack Griffith will be officiating. Burial will follow in Bloomfield Cemetery.
