MOUNT VERNON — Ellen G. Smith, 94, of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 1, 2014, in the Palliative Care Unit at Knox Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Jackson County, W.Va., to the late Marshall “Frank” and Hattie (Comer) Blackshire.
Ellen worked in the laundry department at the former Mercy Hospital in Mount Vernon. She attended the Apostolic Christian Church in Mount Vernon. Ellen enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family and especially spending time with her family.
Ellen is survived by her children, Sandra (Fred) Lawson of Mount Vernon, Lynn (Jim) Nelson of Fredericktown, and Michael Smith of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Jamie Nelson, John Lawson, Mike (Kerry) Nelson, April Mauler (Anthony Angelas) and her mother, Triesa Kirk, Dusty Thompson, Kelly (Steve) Ryan, and Brianna Kirk; great-grandchildren, Megan, Christine, Damien, Pyper, Austin and Cody; great-great-grandchildren, Layla and Scarlett; sister-in-law, Mildred Smith-Sobierajski of Gulf Port, Miss.; and a brother-in-law, Ray Smith of Reynoldsburg.
In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Stanton Smith in 1976; an infant daughter; six sisters; and three brothers.
The family will have a private celebration of Ellen’s life at a later date.
