MOUNT VERNON — John Elwood Fash, 89, went to be with the Lord on March 11, 2014, with his loving family by his side.
Elwood was born Sept. 16, 1924, in Woodhaven, Queens, N.Y., to John Henry Fash Jr. and Esther (Barton) Fash.
A 1943 graduate of Franklin K. Lane High School, N.Y., he attained the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 5 in Woodhaven, N.Y. Elwood always said in one hand he was handed his diploma and the other his draft papers. As a World War II veteran he served as a medic with the 743rd Squadron, 455th Bomber Group (the Vulgar Vultures), 304th Bomber Wing of the 15th Army Air Corp, Cerignola, Italy. Elwood worked 40 years for Continental Insurance Co. in Manhattan, Chicago and Glens Falls as an underwriter and insurance educator. As a member of the East Millstone United Methodist Church, N.J., he served as Lay Leader, often preaching Sunday’s sermon.
He was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Arline Mower Fash; his two brothers, Charles Fash and Clifford Fash; and his sister, Elinor Fash Ebel. He is survived by his children, Susan (William) Murray, Kristin (Timothy) Van Winkle, and Richard (Beverly) Fash; and his seven grandchildren, Kathryn and Margaret Murray, Patrick, Thomas and Andrew Van Winkle, and Anna and Daniel Fash. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, June Fash; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday, at 7 p.m., at Dilley-Lasater Funeral Home in Mount Vernon with Pastor Dave Fowls officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday from 6 p.m. until time of services. Burial will be at Pine Lawn National Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.
