GALION — Rev. W. Daniel Addison, 65, of Galion, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at the OSU Wexner Medical Center.
Dan was born July 22, 1948, to the late Wm. Estel (Eck) and Va. Irene (Pruett) Addison in Mount Vernon. He attended Big Walnut High School until his family moved to Virginia where he graduated from Falls Church High School in 1966. He later received his bachelors in psychology from St. Leo University.
Shortly after high school, Dan enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War. His primary assignment was aircraft system maintenance as a technician. Dan served two tours on the flight decks of the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Enterprise before being honorably discharged as AMH1, Aviation Machinists Mate, Petty Officer First Class. For Dan, it was his honor and his duty to serve his country and he continued to show his support for veterans, speaking at various Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day celebrations.
Dan had a love for Bluegrass music, writing his own songs and working on a CD project. He will be remembered as “Dan the man with a plan”. When Dan wasn’t creating music, you could find him tinkering, working on his model railroad layout, gardening and pursuing his love for photography. He was a talented carpenter and in his early life he helped construct various buildings at the Morrow County Fairgrounds. Being a Life Scout, Dan loved the outdoors and enjoyed hiking the Appalachian Trail. On Sunday afternoons you could find him watching his beloved Washington Redskins or enjoying PGA golf. Dan was also a huge history buff and in particular loved studying the Civil War as well as his own family genealogy.
Always calm, funny, and a great communicator, he never met a stranger. His primary focus was his ministry, both as a pastor and a counselor, and through the Barnabas Ministry, dedicated to “coming alongside to be a blessing the name of the Lord.” Dan ministered to patients and families during his own battle with cancer at the James Cancer Center in Columbus. He was a member of the Vineyard Church of Delaware County in Sunbury.
On June 15, 1985, Dan married the love of his life, Dawn J. Harvell, in Virginia Beach, Va., and shared over 28 years of marriage. Dan is survived by his wife, Dawn; three children, Paige E. (Daniel) Rohe of Ky., Joel D. Addison of Fla., and Zachary W. Addison of Galion; grandchildren, Peter James and soon-to-be-born, Eric Wm Rohe of Ky.; siblings, Mary Addison Evers of Va., Thomas (D’nita) Addison of Calif., sister-in-law, Christine Gayness of Fla., and Carol Addison Carter of Va.; nephews, William and David Gayness; and nieces, Amanda Yeatts, Jessica Neese, and Christina and Lyndsey Addison. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ralph Gayness.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, at Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main Street, Mount Gilead. A life celebration service will be held Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at the Vineyard Church of Delaware County, 1001 W. Cherry Street, Sunbury; with Pastor Michael Hansen officiating.
