MOUNT VERNON — Joan Braddock (Owen), 88, triumphantly entered the gates of heaven to join her husband of 65 years, Doyle, on Jan. 12, 2013.

Joan was born in Mount Vernon, on March 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Greg and Ruth Owen. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School in l943 and Mount Carmel School of Nursing in 1946 where she achieved her passion to become a nurse. Her love of nursing led her to meet her husband, Doyle, when he was injured in a farming accident and spent two months in her care at Mercy Hospital. They married in July of 1948.

Preceded in death by her husband, Doyle; her parents, Greg and Ruth Owen; and sister, Bettie (Jack) Holmes. Joan leaves behind a sister, Lois Bernicken; and her adoring family who knew “She was the best Mom and Grandma ever!”: Daughters, Barb (Steve) Crandall and Carol Kuninger; sons, Dave (Jane) Braddock and Richard (Chris) Braddock; along with six grandchildren, Caroline (Phil) Bange, Cara (Brian) McMillan, Andy Braddock, Kelly (Brian) Wittenmyer, and Liam and Bela Braddock; and five great-grandchildren, Kira and Jackson Bange, Autumn and Isaiah Wittenmyer, and Gage McMillan.

Joan’s life inspired all who knew her contagious smile and love of life as she worked at Mercy Hospital, Country Court Nursing Home, along with her many volunteer hours at the Children’s Department of Mount Vernon Public Library, and her dedication as an active member of the Gay Street United Methodist Church.

She loved to read (especially mysteries), sewing and knitting making countless beautiful memories for her children and grandchildren. But her greatest love in life was being with her family and she hoped all could find this same joy and love!

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home. A service will be held Friday, at the funeral home, beginning at 11 a.m., with Rev. Jim Magaw officiating. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made, in Joan’s name, to Mount Vernon Public Library, 201 N. Mulberry St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050; or Hospice of Knox County, 17700 Coshocton Road, Mount Vernon, OH 43050.
