MOUNT VERNON — Kai Peter Schoenhals, 80, of East Vine Street, Mount Vernon, passed away peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at his residence. He was born April 6, 1933, in Hamburg, Germany, to the late Albert and Annelisa (Börn) Schoenhals.

Kai was a very generous and loving person. He enjoyed being around his family, friends and took great joy out of helping people in any way he could. Kai was always loyal to his friends. He was a wonderful husband and father. One of his greatest joys in life was to travel the world and experience new cultures and languages. His mornings were spent at the YMCA swimming laps in the pool. He loved bird watching and animals, especially his cat Purtzel. He is a proud veteran of the Korean War. Kai received his bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Kalamozoo, his master’s degree in History from Yale and his Ph.D. in History from University of Rochester. He was a Professor of History at Kenyon College for over 35 years.

Kai is survived by his wife, Belkis Schoenhals; a daughter, Belkis Schoenhals; and two sons, Kai Peter Schoenhals II and Kai Peter (Juliana) Schoenhals III.

Kai was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will observe a celebration of life at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, on Friday at 2 p.m., with Pastor Marvin Haught officiating, with an hour of calling from 1 to 2 p.m. The family would like guests to wear something blue if possible, in honor of Kai’s favorite color.
